4 things I learned about running (this week)

Fully committed to making this a real thing. Maybe not even just about running – but about life in general.

Spending so much time looking at a computer or phone screen digesting too much information, it’s good to acknowledge the actual knowledge you’re gaining.

So here’s what’s on my mind:

RUN LIKE A GIRL 

Facebook introduced a runner girl emoji! Hopes are high for iPhone to catch up so we can stop using the stupid little white shoe. Who feels me!?

HAMSTRING PAIN IS A PAIN IN THE…KNEE

Ever since the New Jersey Marathon I’ve felt this very strange, annoying and concerning pain the back of my right knee. I figured, you know what — whatever, it’s overuse. And turns out — it definitely is, but also so much more than that.

After running a 10k, and the AirBnB Brooklyn Half within three weeks of the marathon, the pain got more noticeable (like when I walk), and during speed runs this week at my fave place in the world, Mile High Run Club, I noticed the pain was around my knee and my hamstring.

So after some research, the conclusion that I have come to is that through overuse I undoubtedly rubbed my hamstring the wrong way, which ties right into the IT band and the knee, which is why my knee is bothering me. Obvious disclosure: I’m not a doctor, or in anyway a medical expert, but IMHO my Googling skills are on point.

What I learned, though, is that women are much more prone to IT band pain and injury (because our hips don’t lie), and a hamstring injury is most common to become chronic. Cool? Uncool.

I’ll be taking it totes easy till I feel significantly better. NYC Marathon training can start anywhere from next week, to a week from next week, so I have some wiggle room to wiggle out my pains.

Homegirl is running 26.2 with me in November! Molly Huddle is officially making her TCS NYC Marathon debut at this year’s race.

Can’t say this will be the first time Mollz and I shared a course, I was basically her pacer during this year’s NYC Half. I lost here in Times Square — place is SUCH a zoo.

ROCK N ROLL? MORE LIKE HEAVY MEDAL. 

Everyone needs to hold the phone and immediately sign up for the Rock N Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon.

Why?

I mean, besides the fact that I wrote an inspirational and uplifting post about the epic race? Oh, you want another reason. Oh, ok.

I mean, how perfect? And if you’re not from NYC, just a fair warning that the 10, 8 and 16 trains do not get you to Brooklyn, or anywhere, for that matter.
